Corporate Director of Homes and Communities to £82k
This is an exciting opportunity at an exciting time, as the wellbeing of our communities and the need to secure affordable high-quality housing for our growing population moves to the top of our agenda.
Reporting to and under the overall direction of the Managing Director, you will provide strategic and operational leadership across the following Council service areas: Strategic Housing, Homelessness, Private Sector Housing, Community Development, Health and Wellbeing, Community Safety, Safeguarding, Leisure Services, Bereavement Services, Car Park Management and Civil Enforcement.
Alongside the focus on making Worcester a great place to live, you will also be responsible for much of our income through Leisure, Car Parking and Bereavement Services. These income streams are increasingly vital as we move towards a position of zero funding from Central Government. It calls for a positive determination to build great communities, as well as the commercial awareness to create the right kind of infrastructure moving forwards.
You will be well supported in the role by our Heads of Service for Strategic Housing and Community Services and in turn you’ll need to lead and support them well. A constructive, open, forward-thinking approach should come naturally. You will embrace our values in the way you work, enhancing the culture of our organisation through your leadership, as well as making a real difference to quality of life in our communities.
Significant experience of leading on policy development and management in an organisation of comparable scope and complexity is essential for success in this role. This must also be supported by knowledge of the public sector and, specifically, an understanding of government policy around social housing, homelessness and safeguarding.
As a key member of the Corporate Leadership Team, you need to be committed to and actively support continuous improvement and our pursuit of achieving excellence in everything we do. You will be able to motivate a team, build and maintain a high-performance culture, and drive the delivery of successful outcomes. A proven track record in change and performance management at a senior level is very important, supported by experience of managing large commercial contracts.
You will also need to be able to demonstrate a high degree of political nous, gained through operating at a senior level and having engaged within a complex political environment. In addition to tenacity and resilience, you must be able to offer and accept constructive challenge and have an ability to see things through to delivery.
Most of all, you will need to demonstrate your passion and perseverance for delivering tangible outcomes and possess a positive and optimistic outlook, all of which are essential to providing inspiring leadership and building long-term, sustainable relationships with a range of public and private sector partner organisations.
